Service Manager 2012 R2 Self-Service Portal on Windows Server 2012 (R2)

Deploying Service Manager 2012 (R2) the Self-Service Portal is the only rol which has to be installed on Windows Server 2008 R2. All other roles like Service Manager or Data Warehouse can be installed on Windows Server 2012 (R2).

Based on the Service Manager 2012 (R2) Product Documentation of September 16th, 2013 Microsoft official product support statement is:

  • Windows Server 2012 is not supported on the server hosting the SharePoint Web Parts.
  • SharePoint 2013 is not supported on the server hosting the SharePoint Web Parts.

SharePoint 2010 SP2

A showstopper of installing the Self-Service Portal on Windows Server 2012 (R2) is SharePoint 2010 (SP1). Until SharePoint 2010 (Foundation) SP1 Windows Server 2012 (R2) is not supported from SharePoint perspective. This was pitty as a lot of customers and IT pro’s (including myself) want to get rid of ‘legacy’ software and install the latest and the greatest Cloud OS which is Windows Server 2012 (R2)! With SP2 SharePoint 2010 (Foundation) support is added for Windows Server 2012 (R2).

This paving the way installing Self-Service Portal on Windows Server 2012 (R2).

SharePoint 2013

As far as I known SharePoint 2013 is officially not supported hosting Service Manager 2012 (R2) Self-Service Portal. I guess this will be a matter of time SharePoint 2013 is become suppported as framework hosting your Service Manager 2012 (R2) Self-Service Portal. Thomas Ellermann describes in a blog by using some tweaks how to install the Self-Service Portal on SharePoint 2013.

SharePoint 2010 (Foundation) including SP2 can be download here.  The proces of installing ‘Self-Service Portal Deployment Scenarios for System Center 2012 – Service Manager on TechNet. For production environments I would certainly follow Microsoft product support statements and wait untill Windows Server 2012 (R2) is officially supported hosting Service Manager 2012 (R2) Self-Service Portal. For lab, test of demo environments it is a great sollution.
